It is with immense gratitude and joy that I reflect on the success of United Voices 2024: Strengthening Optimism and Resilience. This year’s summit brought together 120 passionate individuals—youth and adults alike—united in their commitment to building a resilient, inclusive, and empowered community. The event served as a beacon of hope, breaking barriers, reducing stigma, and expanding access to essential mental health resources.

A major highlight of this year’s summit was the introduction of youth-empowering breakout sessions, an idea championed by the youth at the core of United Voices. These sessions provided safe and supportive spaces for learning, sharing, and healing, equipping participants with tools to foster resilience, build connections, and embrace self-expression. Each session—from workshops on emotional resilience to creative arts and vision boards—was thoughtfully designed to meet the diverse needs of attendees, with facilitators bringing expertise, empathy, and enthusiasm to each interaction.

Youth Empowerment in Action

The energy of the summit was elevated by the incredible contributions of young leaders. Youth served as Masters of Ceremonies, setting a welcoming and dynamic tone for the event. Spoken word artist Ed captivated us with his moving performance, while the talented dance duo Sofiaa and Iryna, newcomers from Ukraine, inspired us with their artistry and resilience. We also extend gratitude to Mohammed Baig, whose exceptional artistic talent embodied the spirit of United Voices.

These moments underscored the profound impact of youth leadership and creativity, reinforcing the importance of fostering spaces where young people can thrive and shine.

#VoicesRepresented

A standout moment of the summit was the conversation circle with MLA Janet Eremenko, Alberta’s Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Addiction. This session gave youth leaders from the United Voices Committee a powerful platform to discuss the intersection of mental health and provincial governance. They shared their lived experiences and concerns about barriers within the mental health system, offering valuable insights and advocating for systemic improvements.

MLA Eremenko engaged thoughtfully, acknowledging the critical importance of youth perspectives in shaping policies. This meaningful dialogue highlighted the need for equitable and accessible mental health support while empowering youth to take an active role in advocating for change. The session reinforced United Voices’ mission to amplify youth voices and foster a future where their experiences and ideas drive impactful, systemic transformation.

The Bright Notes Project: A Heartfelt Touch

For the first time, United Voices introduced the Bright Notes project, a heartfelt initiative aimed at spreading positivity and encouragement among newcomer and refugee youth. Through three dedicated card-making events, hosted in partnership with the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth, the Calgary Immigrant Women’s Association, and Youth Central Society, an incredible 214 cards were created.

These cards, lovingly hand-crafted by youth from across Calgary, were filled with messages of hope, belonging, and encouragement. Each card served as a warm and personal gesture, welcoming youth attendees to United Voices events and offering reassurance as they navigate the challenges of settling into a new community.

The cards of positivity remind youth that they are supported, valued, and not alone in their journey. For many youth, these messages bring a sense of connection and comfort during significant life transitions, helping them feel a sense of belonging in their new home.

This initiative beautifully exemplifies the power of youth leadership and creativity, showcasing how small, meaningful acts can make a profound difference in fostering community and support. The Bright Notes project is a testament to the compassion and resilience of Calgary’s youth, reflecting the spirit of empowerment at the heart of United Voices.
