A Night of Reflection, Celebration, and New Beginnings: Highlights from CBFY’s 2025 AGM

Last week, the Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) proudly hosted our Annual General Meeting. It was an evening filled with reflection, inspiration, and hope for the future. It was a wonderful opportunity to gather with our community, share updates, and celebrate the incredible work being done to support immigrant and refugee youth in Calgary.

One of the most meaningful moments of the evening was hearing from Dr. John Wu, the founder of CBFY. Dr. Wu started the organization back in 1990 with a vision to create a welcoming and empowering space for newcomer youth. His words reminded us all of how far we’ve come and how much more we can achieve together.

The AGM was also a time of change. We said goodbye to two dedicated members of our Board of Directors:

  • Doug Alder, our Treasurer, who has served on the board since 2019

  • Kathleen Hurtubise, who joined the board in 2021

Both Doug and Kathleen have given generously of their time, expertise, and passion for youth empowerment. Their contributions have left a lasting impact, and we are sincerely grateful for their years of service.

At the same time, we were thrilled to welcome new leadership to our board. Muhammed Shalwani joined earlier this year, and at the AGM, we officially welcomed Sabah Vayani and Oladipo Jabagun, who were sworn in as new members of the Board of Directors. We’re excited to have their perspectives, talents, and commitment!

Thank you to everyone who attended the AGM and helped make it such a meaningful event. Your support inspires us every day as we work toward building a stronger, more inclusive Calgary for the next generation.
