CBFY in the Spotlight: Advocating for Newcomer Youth
The Calgary Bridge Foundation for Youth (CBFY) recently had the privilege of being featured in a CBC News article that sheds light on the struggles of newcomer youth. With a housing crisis [source], the highest inflation rate in the country [source], school classrooms bursting at the seams [source], and limited resources from school boards and non-profit organizations like ours, the challenges of integrating newcomer children and youth in Calgary are more relevant than ever.
In the article, our CEO Frank Cattoni, along with several members of our Youth Advisory Council, shared their perspectives on the strategies being used to support newcomer students as they navigate the educational landscape in our city. From language barriers to cultural adjustments to making new friends, our organization recognizes the challenges these students face and remains committed to providing them with the resources and support they need to thrive.
Our Youth Advisory Council members, who have experienced the journey of adjusting to a new school environment in Canada, offered invaluable perspectives on the barriers and opportunities faced by newcomer students.
As an organization, we understand that addressing the needs of newcomer and immigrant students requires a collaborative and holistic approach. That’s why we are proud to partner with both major school boards – the Calgary Board of Education and the Calgary Catholic School Board – in our city to meet every student when they first sign up for school, and run programs at more than 60 schools throughout the city. CBFY aims to support newcomer children, youth, and their families every step of the way.
While the current situation in Calgary is challenging, we remain steadfast in our commitment to ensuring that every student, regardless of their background, has the opportunity to unlock their full potential. By working together as a community, we can build a future where every newcomer student feels valued, supported, and empowered to succeed.
